Covid and Flu Vaccinations

Autumn/Winter Flu Clinics 2023/24

Covid Vaccinations

The Broad Street Health Centre is not currently administering Covid vaccinations. In order to check your eligibility and to book an appointment please visit Book, cancel or change a COVID-19 vaccination appointment – NHS (www.nhs.uk) or call 119.

BSHC flu clinics in 2023 will be held from late September.

The flu vaccine is offered free on the NHS to the people in the eligible groups listed below:

  • Over 65 years
  • Pregnant
  • Under 65 years – if you have an underlying health condition that qualifies you for a vaccine
  • Immunocompromised patients and their household contacts
  • Children aged 2 or 3 years on 31 August 2023
  • Healthcare professionals and carers

Every year flu vaccination prevents illnesses, medical visits, hospitalisations, and deaths.

Flu vaccination is an important preventive tool for people with chronic health conditions flu vaccinations have been associated with lower rates of some cardiac events among people with heart disease.

There are a few several types of flu vaccine depending on your age and underlying health conditions.

Vaccines will start to arrive from late September, and we are already planning our clinics. Please do not contact the surgery you will be invited in by the surgery either by text message, phone or letter.

You may also receive a text with a link to book your flu vaccine.

Child Nasal Spray

Child flu vaccinations arrive in small weekly allocations. We offer clinics at various times to allow parents flexibility. Parents of eligible children will be contacted by the practice to book an appointment by text message, phone, or letter. Most children will have the Nasal spray version of the vaccine, so no needles for our youngest patients!

If a grandparent/carer or guardian is bringing your child, please send written permission from the parent when you attend.

The flu vaccine gives you protection for up to 6 months. If you have your vaccine in October, it should cover you for the winter months.

About the flu vaccination

The flu vaccination is a really efficient and convenient way of protecting yourself and others from the flu this winter.

You can get your annual flu vaccination at our surgery quickly, easily and for free under the NHS if you are eligible. Please see NHS: Flu Vaccine for further information about this including eligibility.

General instructions

  • Flu vaccines this year will be given by appointment only to patients eligible. Please do not come to the surgery without an appointment. We are awaiting further instruction from the government regarding the extended programme for 50-64 year olds which is not expected to commence before November.
  • We ask that patients do not arrive more than 5 minutes before their given appointment time, to limit the numbers of patients in the building. Please come alone if you can, or with one carer if needed.
  • Please be prepared to wait outside the centre until you are called in. Please wear a short sleeved top underneath any outer clothing so that the clinician has easy access to your upper arm to administer the vaccine. Coats and outer layers should be removed before entering the clinical room. A face covering must be worn at all times within the practice unless you are exempt from wearing one.
  • The person giving you your vaccine will be wearing PPE (Personal Protective Equipment). This will be a mask and possibly gloves, an apron, visor or goggles. This is based on current guidance for vaccination clinics. The clinician will also wipe down any chair or surfaces that have been in contact with patients.
  • If you are attending the surgery for another reason we may be able to give you your flu vaccine at that time if a clinician is available. If you are coming to see us please do ask if you can have your vaccine.
  • Please do not attend if you have symptoms of COVID-19, or have had contact with a suspected/confirmed case.

Patients aged 65 and over

You are eligible for the flu vaccine this year if you are aged 65 or over, including those who turn 65 years old on or before 31st March 2023.
